Bishop
- Moves any number of squares diagonally
- Worth 3 points
- Stays on same color squares
Knight
- Moves in "L-shape" (2 squares one way, then 1 square perpendicular)
- Only piece that can jump over others
- Worth 3 points
Pawn
- Moves forward one square (two on first move)
- Captures diagonally forward
- Special moves: Promotion & En passant (see below)
- Worth 1 point
Castling
The only move where two pieces move simultaneously. Conditions:
- Neither king nor rook has moved
- No pieces between them
- King not in check
- King doesn't move through check
En Passant
Special pawn capture that can only be done immediately after opponent's pawn advances two squares:
- Opponent moves pawn two squares forward
- Your pawn captures it diagonally as if it moved only one square
- Must be done on the very next move
French for "in passing" - a rare but important rule!
Promotion
When a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board:
- Must be promoted to queen, rook, bishop, or knight
- 99% of cases promote to queen ("queening")
- Underpromotion (to knight) sometimes used for checkmate
- Can choose any piece regardless of captured pieces
Check & Checkmate
Check
- King is under attack
- Must be resolved immediately
- Options: Move king, block, or capture attacker
Checkmate
- King is in check with no legal moves
- Game ends immediately
- Checkmating player wins
Stalemate (no legal moves but not in check) is a draw!
